Internship 2017 Week 3

Cant Believe Its almost over already.

This week I would say to be one of my busiest week since the internship began. It is also so surprising how fast the time as past, just one more week remaining for the internship when everything was just starting to get exciting. The task for this week was to continue fixing the "patwa.org" website and upload to its original domain so that it could be online once again.  In accomplishing that task my mentor and I went to a meeting that i learned a lot from.

In fixing the new "patwa.org" site the first thing that i did at the start of the week was to ensure the theme work well and the coloring for the site was right.  When I was done with the task I started uploading the audio files for the word contents. There was a lot of words to upload audio files so I tried to find methods where this task can be done quickly. After a while, I realized that it is taking far much more time to find a Drupal module or to create a Drupal module to do the task so I uploaded each file manually. In the process of uploading each file I found out that most of the contents that were in the filter for each letter was unpublished words that outside users added, but due to the migration these files were marked published. In fixing that issue I filter each letter by the author being "admin" and also if it is published. Eventually, I was done uploading each file  before the week ended and got the site to have all its functionalities as before looking even better. The site was restored to its official domain at patwa.org, and from now on it will be updated and given even more features and words so that persons from Jamaica and other foreign countries may enjoy the beauty of our language.

On Wednesday, I was invited to take part in a meeting with Mr. Baker. This meeting was a very interesting experience for me because i learned many different aspects to look for and do when taking on a task. This meeting was a discussion on upgrading an app, the customer was giving us full details of the features that the app should have, the features that it already had but should be better as well as the reason for upgrading the app. Although all of that information was given the customer didn't fully have the complete set of resources to get the app in full productivity. From that experience I learned that when given a job to build a software that one should always ensure that the customer has every content or information in getting that app started. Additionally, I learned that even when the customer give you there reasoning for creating the software, you should always ensure that its a liable reasoning, and if you know that the motives won't work out well for the software, its best to try to suggest an idea of correcting the problem or highlight the problem. The final thing that stood out for me was that you always let the customer feel in control and have all first talks on whatever software been build.

The final task that was done in this week was my an essay. I was introduced to an essay competition on  technology. The topic for this essay was "The Importance of technology in schools".  This essay has a word limit of 500 words that to me was pretty limited for the vast amount of points that i have to support it. Coincidentally, I am the president of the robotics club at Calabar and every day at this club I got real life examples of the reasons technology is needed in schools. In writing the essay i choose the two main points that i think was most critical for this topic. The two points that I choose was :

  1. Technology is in almost every career choice, and to get students well prepared for the future and to be as good in there careers , I believe that it will be best for the students to get use to the technology and know how to use it from they are young.
  2. Students are normally very quick in understanding technology , how to use it , manipulate it in doing task never been seen before and many more. This skill then can be used to help students in school to learn much faster and understand what is been taught at a better extent with gadgets. Some students also like to be practical and technology like robots allow this at a great extent.

Those two topics I focused my essay around to get out my reasoning of why technology is important in our schools.

This third week was a very productive week. It ended on a good note with me finishing the upgrade of a complete site, learning how to operate effectively in the business world and entering a technology essay competition getting the chance to show why I believe technology is important in our schools.
